Notes &
PaupExt: 3/3 Aggro
Guardian of the Guildpact, Aven Riftwatcher, and Kor Skyfisher are
2/3’s. Steamcore Weird and Dimir Infiltrator are 1/3’s. Aggro decks
run a lot of 2/2’s and 3/2’s. The creature curve, for the most part,
stops at that magic number 3.
Creature combat in Extended is an interesting situation. So many of us
choose our creatures not for their physical stats but for their ETB
abilities, which we then exploit with Blink or Harvest for card
advantage. The bodies we are left with on the battlefield themselves,
however, are nothing impressive, and often rattle sabres at each other
long into the end game without doing a whole lot of fighting.
This (coupled with the insane lifegain spells) is why Extended is
Pauper’s slowest format. Tumbleweeds drift through the red zone while
players stockpile ammo in their hands for the ultimate blowout. Sounds
a lot like the Cold War, doesn’t it? Eventually, the matches where
neither player has an itchy trigger finger go to time. In matches like
this, no one wins, but everybody who has to go to work or school the
next day loses.
What if a sea change were possible in Pauper Extended? What if players
could marry some amount of card advantage (looking to black or blue)
with formidable creatures that could charge through the red zone and
live to tell the tale (hello green)? What if the grounds were cleared
of rats and spirits, the skies flushed of bats and gargoyles, and
instead beasts and beatsticks roamed the earth? Could the lowly
Assault Zeppelid dominate the skies, defended by a grip of Dispel and
Vines of Vastwood? Will a humble Centaur Courser lift his mighty
semiequestrian head and gaze upon the land he now patrols as his own?
Aggro has focused a lot on being _fast_ in Extended, and several white
weenie builds have appeared to claim that prize. What if aggro focused
on being big (while staying “fast enough”)? What if aggro punched
through a wall of ineffectual ETB creatures and backed up its fat with
a support color?
Is there a Simic Eldrazi deck? Is there a Golgari Eldrazi deck? Could
the two combine into a UBG Eldrazi deck?
