Calling all Paupers: NEW EXTENDED!

Hello Paupers!

Due to Wizards’ recent massive change of the Extended format and the impending format rotation which knocks Time Spiral block and 10th Edition out of Extended, there has never been a better time for newcomers to jump into Extended.

Starting with XPDC 9.01 on Wednesday, October 20 at 8:30pm ET, the following sets will be legal in Pauper Extended:

Magic 2010
Magic 2011
Lorwyn
Morningtide
Shadowmoor
Eventide
Shards of Alara
Conflux
Alara Reborn
Zendikar
Worldwake
Rise of the Eldrazi
Scars of Mirrodin

XPDC on Wednesday nights and daytimes on Sundays at 7PDC are your weekly opportunities to enjoy this bigger, badder card-pool.

XPDC runs 4 rounds of Swiss every week, and even if you don’t make the playoffs you have a chance at a playset of Extended-legal commons as a door prize (plus anything donated by players). Top 8 players are guaranteed a playset of commons, and T4, 2nd place, and 1st place players get 2, 4, or 7 credits at any of the MarlonMTGO.com bots.

You’ve got more than a week to read up on the metagame, get some playtesting in, and prepare for Wednesday, October 20 at XPDC 9.01.

Hope to see you there!

Why is PDC Alienating New Players? Hosting from /join PDC

Guys, we NEED to start hosting our events out of the /join PDC room.

There are SO many times when I sit in /join PDC and see a n00b say something like “wow, someone is actually IN here!”

The benefits of hosting in the /join PDC room outweigh the two counterarguments, which are:

- Tradition
- Event overlap

Tradition is certainly valuable, but in this case I believe the benefit of recruiting new Paupers and PDC participants suggests that we can let go of this one tradition. There may be some confusion at first, but long-time veterans can help redirect players into the appropriate channel (which has been working quite well with XPDC so far).

Event overlap is a more significant concern, but this very rarely comes into play. In the cases when it does, a simple solution would work: the event that is in the final stages (finals, etc) can move into the COM channel, vacating the PDC room for the new event.

I have been running XPDC out of the PDC channel for half a year now and it has caused absolutely zero problems. I can’t imagine the benefits for recruitment and helping new players acclimate to the PDC routines that we would gain by making this slight change.

I am well aware I have been accused of “spreading the community too thin” or trying to institute too many needless changes, but I firmly believe this change is for the good, the solidarity, and the growth of the PDC community.

All it would take is a slight and barely noticeable tweak, and I believe the value to growing the community and aiding new players would be immediate.

Please consider this proposal seriously, hosts of the PDC world.

I welcome all feedback.

[Polyrant] PDC Community: Fragmented or Centralized?

Back when I joined the PDC community, it seemed a lot more centralized than it is today. There were clear, vocal “community leaders” who had their hands in every debate. (I used to consider Evu, SpikeBoyM, and LulThyme the Triumvirate of Pauper, with names like lathspel, idoru, KingRitz, kehmesis, and icarodx serving as top-ranking officials in the community. I know there are plenty of names that pre-date even these, and I am in no way suggesting that these particular players have any superior influence or importance in the community. I am merely speaking about my own, biased impressions of the PDC world when I first started getting involved.) Usually there was only one debate at a time. There may even have been a council of PDC elders who convened at established intervals to hold live forums about these issues. PDC catered to a very small, focused group of Pauper players on MTGO and very few if any other Magic websites gave Pauper the time of day. Certainly not WotC themselves.
